In the present report, a close similarity has been shown in the viability of human and rodent marrows stored at low temperature in glycerol, as measured by their rates of DNA synthesis. The parallel effect of storage upon in vivo “seed” value, i.e., the ability to repopulate marrow spaces destroyed by radiation, has been measured by survival rates in lethally irradiated mice injected with stored bone marrow. By analogy, in view of the in vitro similarities mentioned, the data on in vivo “seed” value of stored mouse ntarrow probably apply to human ntarrow as well.

A canine model in vivo was established to assess the viability of stem cells frozen and stored for prolonged periods in liquid nitrogen. Forty-six foxhounds received totalbody irradiation (1000 rods at 9 rods/mm) followed by the infusion of autologous fresh bone marrow or frozen bone marrow stored for 2 or 5 mo in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen (140#{176}C). The results demonstrated a direc...

Non-frozen murine bone marrow preserved at various temperatures was tested for viability of the committed and pluripotent stem cells. Each stem cell examined retained its proliferative capacity most actively when stored at 4•Ž in ƒ¿-medium containing 15% fetal calf serum. Under these experimental conditions, the recovery of the colony-forming ability of CFU-C and CFU-M was 50% and 74% respectiv...

Background: Interactions of free radicals from ionizing radiation with DNA can induce DNA damage and lead to mutagenesis and carsinogenesis. With respect to radiation damage to human, it is important to protect humans from side effects induced by ionizing radiation. In the present study, the effects of arbutin were investigated by using the micronucleus test for anti-clastogenic activity, to cal...
